day 14: weekly roundup

the week started off grand with a fortuitous 70 euro find on the way to school. it was unreal. at first i thought i saw a 5 euro note on the ground, but as i bent to pick it up, it miraculously transformed into a 50 right in front of my eyes—and then lo and behold! another 20 peeked out from underneath its folds. that would have been an extra $100 in my pocket, but i was with 2 other girls, so we just divided it equally among us. whatever, no big deal haha i still got ca$h m0ney honeyyy. despite all that, on our way back from school we came across a dead bird and also a dead cat… so if i were the superstitious type, i don’t really know how i’d feel about that day.

on tuesday, i took a school field trip to bunratty castle. the tour was a bit of a joke, but we went to the circus shortly afterwards and that was great fun in itself :) it was my first time attending a family circus and i thought it to be just as awe-inspiring as cirque du soleil stoned. contortionists horrify and fascinate me. i could just feel my mirror neurons working overtime as i watched the inhumane things they did to their bodies… ugh oh man.

wednesday, the kids went over to the class below them to try and sell their used books. it is a riot watching little 10-year-olds haggling and bargaining with each other, using such bold phrases like, “I’ll make you a bundle deal with two of these mint condition books for the price of one,” while gleefully whispering to their friend, “i’m gonna rip these little kiddies off!” yes, entertaining, but troubling. little irish businessmen in the making. and they also cuss so easily and carelessly here -__-;; everytime they get stuck on a math problem or something, they shout out DAMNIT! without a thought, and nonchalantly throw around phrases like, “where the hell has Teacher gone off to?” this one kid constantly talks about how much he loves south park and the hangover—which i find thoroughly disturbing. it’s ridiculous how much american pop culture is embedded in their society. these third graders listen to all the same top 40 radio bullshit, watch the same blockbuster movies, and follow the same MTV trash as college students back home. nice going, america.

and then i had the best dinner that night in the spanish arch district. i had a huge bowl of cajun buffalo wings, a plate of grilled sea bass marinated in an amaaaaaaaaaazing beetroot sauce, mashed potatoes (i swear to god every single irish dish comes with potatoes, garlic dip, or both), a glass of white wine, and a bowl of strawberry sorbet. oh god i die it was so yummy. AND FREE. i love it when the professors pay for our dinners—we all literally starve ourselves the entire day in anticipation.

but yeah, the seafood here is boss. i’m assuming it’s because we’re situated right next to the harbor. i had some badass fish & chips today @ harry fitz. i can’t wait to try out the indian & chinese cuisine in london, heard it’s tha shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. but i’m actually freaking out about how i’m gonna get by in the city. yesterday i bought a plane ticket that was £150…. yeah $243 was charged to my visa. it broke my heart.

i’m sure people would be glad to know that i’m actually becoming fond of the girls here. i feel like we’ve all known each other for ages, but truthfully… i know i will probably only hang out with 1 of the 10 girls here back at Emory. the rest are just not my type of people, but we all get along fine. there’s this one mousy girl that we all thought was this shy wallflower that hides behind her camera lens, but after facebook stalking her, we found pictures of her with platinum blonde hair and a smoking hot fratstar boyfriend, living the stoner life. needless to say, my curiosity has been piqued. i guess there is much more to this girl than what meets the eye. i don’t know why i find this so funny, but i do, oh-so-much.
